TOPIC: Prayer For Deliverance
READ: Psalm 4:1-8 (NKJV)
- To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in [my] distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.
- How long, O you sons of men, [Will you turn] my glory to shame? [How long] will you love worthlessness [And] seek falsehood? Selah
- But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him.
- Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah
- Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the LORD.
- [There are] many who say, “Who will show us [any] good?” LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.
- You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.
- I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
THE MESSAGE
David wrote Psalm 4 around the period of Absalom’s conspiracy and evil plans against him. His life was filled with pressure, pain, and persecution. Instead of lying in bed worrying, he appealed to God’s righteousness, mercy, intervention, and deliverance. God is not happy with those who seek false gods and turn His glory into shame.
However, He honours the godly and answers their prayers. This gave the psalmist the confidence that God would answer him. David acknowledged that his relationship and security were not based on who he was or what he did, but his eternal safekeeping came from God.
Beloved, it is good to pray to God with faith and trust Him as our present help in trouble. He will surely hear and answer. It is not a sin to be angry; however, dwelling on anger may give rise to sinful, vengeful thoughts, while sober reflection in prayer would result in peace and forgiveness.
Today, be assured that because you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are safe in him, no matter what transpires in your life. Our help and safety come from God alone. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. His love is unconditional, and He will never leave or forsake us.
PRAYER: Dear God, please give me a deeper confidence in your faithfulness in times of distress in Jesus’ name, Amen!
