MEMORY VERSE: And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. – 1 Chronicles 12:32 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Daniel 2:20-23 (KJV) (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 22 March 2026)

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.

INTRODUCTION: Issachar was the fifth son of Jacob and Leah, and the ninth son overall of the patriarch (Genesis 30:17–18). He had four sons (Genesis 46:13), and went with his father to Egypt, where he died and was buried. Afterwards, his descendants formed one of the tribes of Israel. By the end of the wanderings of Israel through the Sinai desert, they numbered 64,300 fighting men (Numbers 26:23–25). What is most evident is that by the time of David, they were known supremely for their wisdom. They understood the “signs of the times” and how best to live in light of them (1 Chronicles 7:1–5; 12:32).

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. UNDERSTAND TIMES AND SEASONS.
  2. KNOW WHAT TO DO.

1. UNDERSTAND TIMES AND SEASONS

The Bible tells us that there are various seasons (Genesis 8:22; Ecclesiastes 3:1–8). Times and seasons are in God’s hands and can change (Daniel 2:21a). To navigate times and seasons, God gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding (Daniel 2:21c). He reveals the deep and secret things to His children (Deuteronomy 29:29; Daniel 2:22). The men of Issachar had an understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do. It takes a mature believer to discern the times (Hebrews 5:14).

“Understanding the times” also refers to having insight into current circumstances, trends, and seasons in which we live (Romans 13:11). It involves being aware of the cultural, political, social and spiritual climate (Daniel 2:27–28), and recognising opportunities and challenges (1 Timothy 4:1–3).

2. KNOW WHAT TO DO

The men of Issachar understood the signs of the times and knew how to live in the light of them. To know what to do is to be full of ideas and skills, vision-driven, and strategic. Also, it is the ability to:

  1. Make informed decisions: Go back to school (get a degree, master’s, PhD), attend conferences, learn a trade, acquire a skill, etc. (Genesis 26:1–3).
  2. Respond appropriately to challenges and opportunities (Genesis 26:12–22; Matthew 2:13–14; John 2:3–5).
  3. Be wise and authentic: live a life of impact for the cause of Christ (1 Peter 3:10–11).
  4. Engage in kingdom activities (Matthew 6:33).
  5. Fulfil your purpose and calling (John 18:37).

CONCLUSION: The men of Issachar were sought after for counsel on political and spiritual matters and they played an important role in the leadership of Israel. You can be like them.

QUESTIONS

  1. State four ways to understand times and seasons.
  2. Identify three things to do at a time.

FURTHER READINGS:

Sunday: Genesis 1:14 (KJV)
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Monday: Psalm 62:8 (KJV)
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah

Tuesday: Isaiah 33:6 (KJV)
And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the Lord is his treasure.

Wednesday: Psalm 34:1 (KJV)
I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Thursday: Matthew 16:3 (KJV)
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

Friday: Acts 14:15-17 (KJV)
15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

Saturday: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 (KJV)
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

ASSIGNMENT: To be like the men of Issachar, state five (5) things to do (2×5=10 Marks).
